Old Fart Too Stupid to Stop Car

Thats my headline. James Sikes, the driver of the 2008 Prius that had a stuck accelerator in California a couple days ago, says he didn't put his car in neutral "because he worried the car would flip." Are you kidding me?? Worried it would flip? And, after 20 minutes of high speed driving combined with frequent brake use
(the CHP officer said he smelled burning brakes when he came up behind the car), the badly abused brakes combined with the E-brake were still strong enough to bring the car from nearly 85 mph down to 55 mph, at which point he shut off the car and it came to a stop. So let me get this straight - the guy rode the brakes for 20 minutes at freeway speeds, at which point brake temperatures were probably hot enough to melt lead, but the brakes could still haul the car down from 85 to 55, with the accelerator stuck at WOT?? Now how come the dufus didn't just tromp on the brakes the moment he noticed a problem - back when those brakes were cool and fresh? He would have had no problem getting the car to stop, and once stopped, the brakes can hold the car forever without any problem, while he calmly shifts into park and turns the car off. This is assuming he really was as panicked as he says he was and really couldn't think straight, which is what prevented him from shifting to neutral or turning the car off in the first place. #1 reaction when you are going too fast -without any special training or even knowledge of how a Prius shifter or ignition button works - should be to press the brakes until you stop! Is this really so hard? But he just presses the brakes just enough to repeatedly slow down a bit for over 20 minutes?! This guy should have his license revoked!
